We planning to go Denver -> Sacto by rail, thinking that we'd have a better chance to pass through the rockies during daylight hours. For viewing scenery from an economy sleeper, is there a better side of the train? Can sleepers be reserved left or right side? Or is this even something to be concerned about?

Deluxe sleepers are already booked for our travel day. We'd like to upgrade from economy. Any thoughts on how to do so?

As for which side of the train to be on, it's kind of a tossup. I might lean a bit left because the Colorado River is on that side more often. To see Gore Canyon and you'll need to see out the left side. To see Glenwood Canyon and admire the wierd and fascinating engineering of Interstate 70, you'll need to see out the right. Ruby Canyon at the Colo/Utah border is on the left. The scenery over Donner Pass in the Sierra can be seen on the right.

I don't know if you can request a particular side or not. I've never tried. It depends on the car orientation, and when I took that trip last year there were cars oriented both ways on our train.

But remember, you are not limited to your room. The sightseer lounge and diner allow you to see out both sides. If your room is on the lower level you can easily go to the windows at the entry vestibule doors. You are free to walk about any time.

As for an upgrade, you might ask if there is a waiting list. I know they have called people in the past if an opening develops. If they don't do that, call a few days before your departure and see if there are any cancellations. Also inquire after you board. There's always a small chance then.

Other hints:
Get one of those toiletry kits that you can hang on a coathook. It can be very useful in their little bathrooms.

Wear comfortable rubber soled shoes that you can take off and put on easily. I prefer shoes with velcro fasteners on a train, especially for middle of the night bathroom runs. You are required to wear shoes as you walk around the train, but its nice to kick them off at your seat.

When the train is moving, walk with your feet spread slightly farther apart than normal and you will maintain your balance better.

Remember your meals are included in the price of your sleeper fare. Most people don't know this, but you can also get your meal at the snack bar if you don't want a full sit-down meal. Just tell the snack bar attendant you are a sleeper passenger and your car/room numbers. I don't think that applies to between meal snacks, though.

If your carry-on tote bags are less than 9.5" thick they will fit under your sleeper seats.

Tip your attendant $5-10 when you get off, depending on service quality.

Expect good service, and have a good time, but don't expect absolute perfection. There are bound to be some minor glitches somewhere along your journey.
