I have been thinking about taking my family on a train ride from Portland, Oregon to Vancouver, BC, but I have four children. The ages are: seven, five, two and three months. I am just afraid that my children will be hanging off the walls. I was just curious about what others have done with their own children or if anybody has an idea.

Been a while for me, but I asked my daughter-in-law, mother of a boy, 7, and a girl, 4. They travel regularly on the Regionals between Washington and New London, Conn. Her response:
Definitely different planning than flying. On the plus side, we can usually count on power at each seat (for video players, etc.). On the negative side, I can't read to the kids due to motion sickness.
Here are some of our tricks:
- activity books (like coloring or stickers) - regular books if you don't get motion sick - iPod loaded with tunes and/or tv shows -frequent trips to the cafe car - puzzles/games/Legos spread out on the cafe car tables - naps - i-spy - try to sit near someone else with kids and hope they hit it off.
