Here is an article about Amtrak shipping with the USPS: http://www.railnews.net/cgi-bin/news/golink.exe?http://www.dmnews.com/cgi-bin/artprevbot.cgi?article_id=20730
They [USPS] say they have a backup plan if Amtrak's system has to be shut down, but Gunn and the USPS are confident that it won't have to happen. Comments?

On a side note: Gunn says that they will borrow the $200M and pay it back sometime in 2003 with the $1.2B subsidy, but will they HAVE the money to pay it back? (I know... it's too soon to tell).

Good question. That will essentially knock down teh $1.2 billion to $1 billion. But since $1 billion is almost twice as much as they got last year, they may be able to make do, especially if Gunn manages to clean out the dead weight in management.

But it should be noted that in yesterday's Lehrer interview, Gunn indicated the chance of getting the loan was about 50-50. Hardly a sure thing. But if Amtrak does shut down across the board, you can bet there will be some scrambling in Congress to find the money.

For my 2¢ worth...

Do I believe Mr. Gunn will shut down Amtrak if the loans do not come through?....YES

Do I think Amtrak will shut down?....NO

I am confident that the $200M funding will be obtained....placing the NRPS even deeper in debt. This what really worries me.

Nobody seems to be saying much about the debt that Amtrak has built up over the years. I know that keeping things going takes priority over paying back loans, but someday this has to be taken care of in order to become financially secure. In Amtrak's case this may never happen.
