This week's edition of the National Corridors newsletter has a story on how they remove the old stripes on the trains and apply new ones. Here's the link: http://www.nationalcorridors.org/df/df02232004.shtml

There's also a couple of articles on Istook's little scheme, and an endorsement of Amtrak from the League of Cities. Its the continuing saga of how Amtrak gets hit from one side and praised from another.

Interesting article about the decals. I never realized the "decorating" process was so labor-intensive.

Then again, if Amtrak simply opted for plain stainless steel cars, each sporting nothing more than the word "Amtrak" in modern black letters (a simple-but-elegant design scheme that both the Santa Fe and the Burlington used very effectively), the railroad would save all that time, extra labor, and a fair amount of cash.

There are so many more pressing things that Amtrak needs to fix. I wish they'd spend the "decal" portion of my tax dollar on something more essential.

Maybe Amtrak should visit some of the train operating companies over here in the UK. They've been applying vinyls for years - and generally all-over rather than just stripes. First Great Western is on its fifth variant since privatisation some 10 years ago! That's a lot of removing and re-applying!

Many trains are simply painted too - quite labour intensive as the detail is often hand painted rather than done by machine.
