NECN (New England Comcast News) that Amtrak from NY to Boston and also Boston to Portland, ME are shut down.
Looking out the window to the back porch and listening to the howling wind I can understand why. Thank goodness I am retired and do not have to worry about getting out in the morning.

The AmMap I saw on the news also showed some shutdowns in the Carolinas. Must be a whopper!

We had a whopper here this week also. I actually had to turn on my windshield wipers for a few minutes. [Razz]

Smitty --- this is blizzard conditions.
I can not see the house across the street (about 150 feet away). At this hour the lights would be on still, and I do see the lights for a minute or two when the wind dies down for a second.

While I hate snow --- at least it can be shoveled. Saw footage of the mudslides out in CA. Much more damaging and shoveling ain't going to help those cars near to buried in the mud.

Am crossing fingers that we do not lose power.

Just finished digging out this evening after it finally stopped here. Good thing (almost)everybody had the weekend off.
Looking forward to New Years Day - calling for 60 degrees!

Shutdowns in the Carolinas are understandable - I saw reports of 8 inches in Fayetteville, NC....a location on the former ACL which, frankly, doesn't get that kind of snow more than once in 10-15 years.

At the moment I am sitting comfortably in my living room looking out at 10-12 inches of snow in my front yard. It has been snowing here for about 48 hours and there are still light flurries though it looks as if the sun might come out today.

I am thrilled that the electricity has stayed on..... but then after the 'big one' last December where we lost power for three days the local utility people spent months clearing trees and brush which 'might' fall on a power line next time all over Western North Carolina.

Even for the mountains of North Carolina which get 6-10 'measurable' snowfalls each winter, this one is big. By measurable I mean at least a couple of inches.

I'm just hoping that the Asheville airport reopens tomorrow so that we can send my mother-in-law home to Orlando.

And NOW you all know that I have ulterior motives when I pine for a passenger train to/from Asheville with a through sleeper to Orlando and Miami!

OK...... let's go shovel the drive for the third time..... though I don't really need to go anywhere today.

Climbing toward 5,000 posts like the Southwest Chief ascending Raton Pass. Cautiously, not nearly as fast as in the old days, and hoping to avoid premature reroutes.

I think the trains are running to Boston now, but on a limited schedule. The Empire Service never shut down but a few of the trains may have been canceled and consolidated.

Long Island Railroad, on the other hand, is out, and some of Metro North into Connecticut. NJ Transit trains is pretty much running; but I gather all their buses were canceled.

Or VIA Rail..... my one trip on the Canadian was at regular speed through a blizzard..... we were on-time or early at every station from Vancouver to Winnipeg...... and there were some great times in the Park dome too.
