I am currently on vacation in the LA area and was reserved to go on a bus from San Jose then the Surfliner to Los Angeles. When I arrived to the San Jose train station the agent printed my tickets and said the Saturday bus gets cancelled a lot due to the driver being sick or does not get enough rest.
Anyways 10 minutes passes and the agent says we are re-routing you through Stockton and Bakersfield and we are refunding your ticket and giving you a free trip on the San Jquins and buses. So I saved $55 dollars.
It gets better I was able to use my Guest Rewards at the last minute to get a Business Class Seat and bus from LA-San Jose.
Then today I called the Customer Relations and they are giving me a $20 dollar voutcher for the meals and drinks I would have gotten on the Surfliner.
I can say I have read many bad events on Amtrak but this is the best customer service I got in a long time. Even better I arrived LA 45 minutes before the Surfliner.
I cannot praise the agent in San Jose enough for rerouting me and refunding my ticket. Ususally they will say tough luck we're keeping the money and transferring your reservation to another route. Even the airlines won't refund you unless the flight gets in late.
Here Amtrak got me in 45 minutes early and refunded my money plus a $20 dollar voutcher.
I will stay with Amtrak. I was especially surpirsed of the treatment due to the budget situation. I guess they will fire the bus driver since it happens on Saturdays.

Today I got my $20 dollar Amtrak Voucher which Iwill apply to an upcoming trip.

Travelplus --- I believe that your experience with Amtrak happens more often than we know. Unfortunately we hear the complaints more often (and louder) than we hear about the positive experiences or about excellent customer care given by many Amtrak employees.
