We will be traveling to LA from Galesburg on the Southwest Chief. We have booked a roomette/standard bedroom. Will the roomette accommodate a garment bag on wheels?

The Roomette has very little storage space. There is space under the seats for small carry-ons, and either a small closet, about 6" wide or short rod to hang a few items. For larger items, there are luggage racks in the hallway on the lower level.

I recently booked a roomette (for two of us) for a trip next week aboard the City of New Orleans. I was told we would be allowed only one fullsized suitcase in the room due to space limitations. I'm assuming small carry-ons and/or a briefcase will be okay.
