Has anyone had recent positive experiences in onboard upgrading to sleepers at a reduced price? I did this last year twice, successfully.

However, I've just heard from a station agent that Amtrak now apparently has a policy of upgrades only at full price.

My first long distance trip on the Coast Starlight We booked a Sleeper going, and coach the way back..we would regret doing this and wanted to upgrade. The price on the phone or net was $237 for a roomette, the conductor gave us one for just $100. I think the availability depends on the dates that you are traveling.

A friend recently (within the last couple of weeks) booked coach on the Starlight from Redding to SBA and was able to upgrade on board for $75.00 cash.
