I am planning a trip to Flagstaff (maybe not till next year) and have noticed many tour guides and travel articles advise against staying in the less expensive motels on Rte 66 because they are so near the rail line that the freight trains keep people up at night. I am wondering if anyone has any ever stayed in one of these places and what your experience was like. Also, pls include the name of the motel/hotel if you remember it and recommend it. Thanks so much!

Sounds like a great recommendation to me, yes I would lose sleep watching that awesome parade on the Santa Fe.

We stayed at the Town House motel( two blocks from the Amtrak station), and the trains didn't bother us at all. What did bother us was the lack of coffee in the room and the lack of coffee in the closed office in the morning. We walked down to Maggies (4 blocks) and had a great breakfast and adequate coffee.

If you have time, get one of the Flagstaff hotel guides from their chamber of commerce. They have some nice discounts for name brand hotels in Flagstaff ($29.95 & 39.95 a night special coupon rates). Some of them advertise that they are not near the RR tracks.

A few years ago we stayed at the Holiday Inn on the east side of Flagstaff. Rooms on the back side have a good view of the ex-ATSF mainline from about a hundred yards away. They also have courtesy pickup at the Amtrak station and have a rental car location at the hotel.

I've stayed at the Town House and had no problems with track noise. It faces the tracks.

I've also stayed at the Best Westerns on the north side of the tracks further east, about a mile or so.

You can hear the trains from the hotel registration area, but I don't recall hearing the train sounds from the rooms, which are further north away from the tracks.

This was the Best Western Pony Soldier.

Another suggestion for motels/hotels in Flagstaff. I have stayed at "Little America", in Flag, several times. This was over 25 yrs ago, but I still think it is highly rated. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60971-d75749-Reviews-Little_America_Hotel_and_Towers-Flagstaff_Arizona.html
