There are as many as three Train #3, Southwest Chief's on the road at any given time. Your inquiry should be perfected to include the date of origin of the train regarding your inquiry.
For example Amtrak identifies the train departing Chicago today as #3(12); it will keep that identity anywhere it is on its journey until it arrives at LA on March 14.

A friend noted at least one of the Trains 3 was denoted by Amtrak as 1003, probably account the switch to Daylight Savings Time.
I can see the logic in that: The train is OT to standard time, but automatically forfeits an hour to the Savings (except in AZ).

I think Mr. Pullman has addressed the matter. From a review I note #3(10) 'isn't'; but, however, Extra 1003 (10) arrived LAX only three minutes late. That means someone 'shoveled on the coal, got to keep 'er rollin' and recovered 57 minutes en route between Topeka and LA.
Annulling scheduled trains and operating them as "Passenger Extras' is something the railroads have done since 1966 on "Spring forward, Fall back" days, when "Standard Time' became "Daylight time' during its applicable period.
But if this is the point Mr. Loiter is addressing, he does have a valid one; the public is simply not aware of this railroad practice and likely not even "the slightest' aware that they should be looking for 1003 at Amtrak Train Status in place of 3 for this 'bi-ennial' occurrence.

Thanks for the info. That was what I missed. I didn\t know the alternate code for todays train 3 arriving here in beautiful downtown Fullerton.
