This may have been posted earlier. Amtrak apparently is looking at the possibility of a trackside Wi-Fi network to enhance Wi-Fi reception along the NE corridor. Amtrak currently relies on picking up signals from cellular towers but there is much congestion from smartphone streaming, etc.
I don't know what it will cost, but sounds like a good idea. Hopefully it will be seen on many other Amtrak routes:

I have yet to encounter Amtrak WiFi, as I only joined the 21st century less than two months ago, when I got a Samsung Galaxy S5. The trip overseas last month is what prompted the "upgrade".
I found that on my Munich Salzburg train rides that the only time the WiFi worked was when the train was stopped at a station. I can only hope that for those who are naked without the electronic plaything, the Amtrak varietal works better than did the German.

It works well on the Surfliner, moving or not. And even on the Coast Starlight on my last trip. Again, moving or not but there are areas with no coverage on the CS.

I've never had a problem on the Surfliner. On the Starlight it was spotty at best but that was a year ago and they may have improved the system. The PPC attendant spent a lot of time rebooting the system.
