I was watching FOX 11 NEWS at 10 when suddenly I heard the word "Amtrak" in one of the News Anchors mouths. I looked at my TV, and to my suprise I learned there had been a small derailment in Emeryville 1/1/04 --where the California Zephyr finishes and starts its route to Chicago..Does anyone have anymore info about this..IE: a link, a pitcure? As usual the TV stations just did a wuick thing using the footage from there Norther California (Emmerivylle FOX station).

Thanks,
Anton

I think it is probably referring to a "minor" derailment near Truckee. See http://www.trainorders.com/stories/2004/01/03/1783.php for the full story.

You can view the "front" page of the trainorders forums (most recent 45 posts) without being a paying member.

Sorry, I'd just joined and thought that page was accessible to all. TrainOrders is a bit busier than here, though I don't like the forum layout.

Two axles of one car slipped off the rails near Truckee. Nobody injured. Two halves of train either side of the derailed car were joined together on the adjacent track, where they continued westbound. The reason it took so long was because of the weather and attempts to rerail the car failed.

The train was without light and power for several hours - and eventually ran out of food! Once the train was enroute again, staff boarded at the next stop and handed out coffee and doughnuts. The train arrived in Emeryville 16 hours and 53 minutes late.

Of course, the next eastbound was severely late leaving too.
