I read in a post below that the Three Rivers is being eliminated. This is disappointing because I was planning a Seattle to Philadelphia trip for next year. What are the alternatives? I looked at taking the Lake Shore Limited from Chi-NY and then taking the Acela to Philly, but the Acela very pricey to add on top of the Sleeper fare of the Builder and the Limited. I'm not very familiar with Amtrak's east coast routes. Are there other ways to Philadelphia from Chicago?

The Cardinal runs Chi-Nyp via Washington but that's a long trip, ithink you could go LSL and change trains at NYP to continue to Philadelphia

Another option is to go via the Capitol Ltd., & then catch one of the "Regionals" from DC to Philly. I've done this myself in the past, & it seems to work out ok.

Options I'd consider:

1. Take the Lake Shore Chi to NY and then take a Regional train from NY to Philly.

2. Take the Capitol Limited Chi to DC and then take a Regional train from DC to Philly.

3. Take the Capitol Limited from Chi to Pittsburgh, then transfer in Pittsburgh to the Three Rivers/Pennsylvanian (what ever they are going to call the single train running from Pittsbugh to Philly by then). Take note of the layover in Pittsburgh that will be in effect when you travel, though, and have a backup plan if the Capitol Limited is late (i.e. continuing on to DC).

There are basically three types of service between DC-Philly-NY (listed from most expensive to least expensive):

1. Acela Express
2. Metroliner
3. Regionals

Keystone trains and Clockers also operate between NY and Philly. These would be along the price range of the Regionals, but don't offer cafe service and could involve a race to find a seat, as some are crowded at rush hour.

Thanks everyone!

I went to Amtrak's website and plugged in a sample itinerary just to get an idea of the scheduling. I like the scheduling of the Capitol Limited-Regional option, but barring a schedule change by Amtrak, the departure of the CL(5:35) cuts it very close to the arrival of the Empire Builder(3:45). What happens if the Builder is late? Is the CL held or does Amtrak bustitute passengers to DC?

The Capital is rarely held for more than 15-20 minutes because then they miss their "window" on NS. Late connections will be routed on the LSL via NY or if extremely late, housed overnight. Bus/taxi is utilized only for short connections from Chicago, normally.

I would not attempt to schedule a "same-day" connection from ANY of the Western trains to the Capitol. You will only end-up very frustrated---to say the least. In that the Western trains are usually late, there is simply no way to make the connection.

Fact is, the Capitol leaves Chicago too early for the Western trains to connect. In days past, the Capitol departed Chicago---Eastbound---at about 7:20 PM. This made connections to this train more feasible. But, since the Capitol's departure time has been moved up to an earlier 5:20 PM departure it is almost impossible to make a connection to that train from the West.

The "reasoning" behind the Capitol's earlier departure from Chicago (from what I understand) was to make connections with that train easier with South-bound trains from DC. However, this has totally ruined any likely chance of connections to the Capitol from Western trains.

As I have posted on this site before, I always connected to the 3-Rivers Eastbound from Chicago because it left late---at 10:30 PM. Now, I ---and many others---will be forced to consider other options Eastbound from Chicago , since the 3-Rivers will no longer be available.

So, to get back to Pittsburgh (my "home" station ) from Chicago, I must either take the Lake Shore or the Cardinal. Either one will add at least a full day to my return. Needless to say I am rather upset about this.

Countless individuals have been (and will continue to be ) "stranded" in Chicago---unable to connect to the Capitol from Western trains. This makes for very frustrated passengers and must be very costly to Amtrak if these individuals must be hoteled in Chicago overnite. To be honest, I think more connections are missed to the Eastbound Capitol than were EVER missed to the Southern trains from DC when the Capitol ran a later departure from Chicago. Needless to say, I think it was a HUGE blunder on Amtrak's part when the Capitols schedule was changed. Another blunder was the elimination of the 3-Rivers to/from Chicago.

I am still uncertain what I am going to do about my Eastbound connection in Chicago back to Pittsburgh. I may actually over-nite in Chicago and FLY back to Pittsburgh from there. I guess it would make more sense.

This is the very reason why the Three Rivers should not have been eliminated - safety net for connecting passengers. And it's stupid to take the Viewliner off prior to the train's elimination in March 2005 - course it helps Amtrak with their case, as they will likely be able to say -"ridership has been declining on the Three Rivers, so this is another reason for eliminating the train." However, the Viewliner on the Three Rivers was usually booked, so late arriving passengers were usually offered coach only.

The Capitol Limited's schedule is unchanged in the timetable effective Nov. 1. The 5:35 departure time from Chicago is very convenient and nice - if all other trains connecting to it operated on time (or close to it). The Empire Builder and Southwest Chief were somewhat reliable for arriving on-time or less than 2 hours late. But lately - whole system is unpredictable. I don't think they have been holding the Capitol Limited for connecting passengers, as much as they used to in the past. Despite being the case in the summer, I don't think the Southwest Chief/Capitol Limited share the same equipment heading eastbound any more (run through).

I was in CHI on 9/17. As of then, the Capitol Limited still was sharing equipment with the SWC.
