Has anyone seen the Sunset lately? How is the consist set up for the equipment from New Orleans? Are there 2 engines, a full baggage car, crew sleeper, and 1 or 2 sleepers? Are coaches or sleepers currently in front?

Don't know about the Sunset consist from New Orleans, but when I took the Texas Eagle from Chicago last year, a sleeper and a coach from the Eagle were coupled onto the rear of the Sunset. It had a Sightseer lounge and a Cross Country Cafe for a diner.

I'm assuming 1 sleeper along with a transition sleeper-dorm and 2 engines on the Sunset from NOL along with the diner, lounge, and 2 coaches. Hopefully someone will confirm.

Good information Kevin.

Do you ever use the Eagle to go home for a visit from school?

It's my main mode of transportation. I happen to be traveling home for Spring Break leaving San Marcos March 11th on it.

That is great.

Kudos to anyone who utilizes rail transit as their travel choice when it is available to them.

I'd imagine that with the Sunset portion operating tri-weekly that it's sometimes a challenge to make it work.

It works great going west cause I can leave Friday night and not miss any classes and catch up on much needed sleep (something that seems to be missing from every college student's schedule). Going east though is a bit of a problem, the dorms at my university do not open to students till noon the Sunday we are assigned to come back. The Eagle arrives at 8:30am so I'm stuck waiting for 3 hours outside my dorm.

I had the issue of not being able to get back into student housing until the next day during grad school...... fortunately there was a girl I was dating in Baltimore who allowed me to sleep on her couch for the night....... and then I caught MARC back to College Park the next morning.

Is there any more news on the proposed daily CHI-LAX Texas Eagle and the stub train SAS-NOL?

I remember something about it possibly coming in with the new summer schedules but looking on the Amtrak planner there's nothing different to the present.

This was the exact consist we had on our trip 2 weeks ago. The sleeper from NOL was 32115 Washington and the car from the Eagle was a Superliner I. I'm glad the daily service hasn't materialized as it would kill sleeper service east of San Antonio which is ridiculous.
