For David P ("notelvis") or anyone else who may know -- I am tentatively planning another AMTRAK trip (my first "retirement trip") for late August, which may involve an overnight at the Vagabond Inn in SAC -- what is their web site URL where I can get rate info and make an online reservation?

Thanks--

Rich,

It's vagabondinn.com and then you select SAC.

On your other message, I know site you mean, but memory fails. Someone will remember.

Sorry to have been AWOL....... had a couple of appointments yesterday afternoon and evening and have been away from the internet for about 24 hours...

The link smitty provided will do the trick...... just be sure that you're looking at the Executive Old Town Vagabond Inn in Sacramento. They have another one out by the freeway there too.

Well, at least someone else around here is not going Cold Turkey because he has been away from the internet for 24 hours!!!!

During the seventeen YTD nights I've been away from the barn, I read when it is convenient to do so. All of my out of town postings have a "dateline' (the hotel I stayed at on the recent trip - Greenwich Hyatt - wanted $5 for 10 minutes of use; no free "quickie checks', so I lumbered through using my Sister's Apple - silence Gil; beggars best not be choosers), and if anyone is interested, they will note the considerable decrease in my frequency of posting.

I got my reservation for Vagabond Inn on 9/7 -- is the Vagabond within walking distance of the SAC AMTRAK station? I can either walk or take a taxi. I'll be ariving SAC by thruway bus from Stockton at 6:25 PM, and will have either 2 suitcases or 1 suitcase and a laptop. I guess I won't get in in time to make a trip to the Cal. RR Museum, eh?.....

You can walk, as long as luggage has wheels. Turn left when you exit the station and cross at the traffic light. It's very close.

Speaking of luggage, are you packed yet?

Nope, unfortunately you won't make it. It is a CA State Park, and thus, it has pretty short hours: 1000-1700. At least it's still open and not bankrupt (yet)---we are in bad shape in this state.

Echoing Vicki -

CROSS AT THE LIGHT.

You can actually look almost directly at the Vagabond Inn across the parking lot and the street from the Sacramento station BUT as that street is in the process of becoming an on ramp for northbound I-5, traffic is already booking it pretty good by the time it reaches halfway down the block.

We don't want your trip report coming from a Sacramento hospital!

Am I packed? Almost. Will board the CS next Sunday for SF and cruise to Alaska.

Smitty, are you joining me on the CS? Bonus feature will be meeting Frank at SBA for two minutes. Not enough time to enjoy his many qualities but that is all that Amtrak will allow.

Vicki---I won't be on-board for this trip. [Frown] I'm looking forward to meeting all of you guys someday! Is this the trip where your ship is leaving from one of the SF piers? If so, I'll watch on the webcam (I'm working on Sunday).

I still want to win either the lottery or hit it big in Vegas and then charter a PV for a few Railforum folks. I think that would be a lot of fun. Just a nice trip on the Starlight to Seattle, and then fly home of course on Virgin America, First Class. [Big Grin]

Smitty--

Is this the webcam you use? http://www.webmarin.com/ If there is one that gives a closer view of the Pier 35 area I'd appreciate having it.

Frank: I was going to watch from the webcam on the bridge of the ship (assuming it has one?). I thought they all had bridge cams.

There is a bridge cam. It is the Sea Princess.

I'd forgotten about the bridge cam. Of course you can't see the ship itself but you should get great views going under the "other" bridge!

Sadly, Princess is one of the few cruise lines that I know of that has bridge cams (and sometimes "Wedding cams") consistently across the fleet.

I'll be watching!

Actually, Vicki, I think you are on the Starlight right now? If so, I have two friends who are on-board. They rode down to LA yesterday on the "Starhachapi" that detoured over Tehachapi. If you go to the lounge car, it's a little Asian guy named Ben and a tall older white guy, skinny, with big glasses, and wearing a baseball hat (name is Bill). They're both really nice guys---go say hi! If you have any aviation questions, they will have the answers---extremely knowledgeable.

And I almost met Ben. He was asking one of the car attendants to take his picture next to the "George Pullman" name. I heard him chatting about the Superliner I vs. II.
