The Starlight is one of Amtrak's best trains. The ride is very scenic and relaxing, especially if you go first class, which it sounds like you're doing. You'll definitely enjoy the Pacific Parlour Car, which is modeled after lounge cars from 1950's streamliners.

As for ordering extra dessert, I've never actually seen anyone do this. Meals are included with the sleeping car accommodations, so I would think that extra dessert is too. Refreshments are served free in the Parlour car throughout the trip.

Traveling first class on Coast Starlight gives you breakfast, lunch, dinner (WITH dessert) and all the drinks you can get, plus a few goodies in the Parlour Car.

The Starlight sets the standard for all other Amtrak long-distance trains. I think you'll enjoy it. Here is my travelogue, with lots of photos, of a recent trip on the Starlight: http://hometown.aol.com/toysontrax/traveltales/starlight-may-june-02.html

I don't know about the extra dessert. Their meals are very filling so I don't expect you'd need one.
