Hi all. Stumbled into this site and have been browsing the posts. Very interesting group of experts here! We are taking the SUNSET LIMITED from L.A. to New Orleans in December. We've made this trip before, but this is our first time with a sleeper and we can't wait! My question is about the dining car. I know that we can eat for free but I wonder if beverages are included in that "free"? How about wine? Also, is there assigned seating times or is it first come first served and is there usually a wait? If so, are sleeper passengers given preferential seating over "paying" diners?

On most long distance trains, including the Sunset, breakfast starts at 6:30 and it is first come-first served. Lunch will be announced and it will be first come-first served. Supper will be by reservation and the Dining car steward will travel through the sleepers first, asking for your preference on supper times. This usually happens around 3 pm. Have someone in your room. If you are in the lounge/sightseer car, you will be asked last and will have to settle for what's left, time-wise.
All non-alcoholic beverages are free, you have to pay for all alcoholic beverages.
If there is a wait for breakfast or lunch, it will be first come-first served, too.

Yes you get a drink with you meal non alcoholic.And sleeping car passengers get first dibs on seating times.It is first come for breakfest and lunch.

bring your own wine aboard, although not to the dining car. the wine in the dining car is awful skip it.

My old bugbear: the meals are *not free*, they're *included* in the price.
Sometimes lunch is by reservation, a little less formal than dinner, but if the train is busy they sometimes do it by reservations.

There are no stupid dining cars. Of course, if you made it out east I'd hope you rode in 8552. It's very nice. There are others like it, but when I was in that one, I didn't care how long the check took to come back.
