Has anyone out there been on Amtrak on New Year's Eve? What was it like?

How about while crossing time zones and getting 2 for 1?

Almost thirty years ago, my NRHS Chapter, North Western Illinois, regularly sponsored New Year's Eve trips.

The 'topper' was one sponsored New Year's Eve 1973. This involved an extra 10-6 sleeper added to #3 consist Chi-Kansas City. At KC, the car was "cut' and added to #4 for the return to Chi Jan 1, 1974.

Needless to say, this was not accomplished without the "efforts' of some "celebrity railfan" Chapter Members.

The Turquoise Room was 'ours'. 'Private stock" bubbly was served, and "a good time (uh, not exactly on the cheap)was had by all".

On December 31, 1999, my wife and I were on the CZ. We stopped at Provo, UT for the time change (remember the Y2K scare) and got to watch the fireworks, had complementary Champagne, and got nifty train whistles (Amtrak 2000).

It was a blast.....
