I'm sure most of you all have found this on the Amtrak Website:
http://tickets.amtrak.com/Amtrak/railsale

I couldn't believe how low some of those fares were. Like New Orleans to Orlando (the one my son and I just went on over New Years) it's posted now for $17.60!!!

Better for Amtrak having occupied seats sold cheaply than empty seats earning nothing! Definitely good value for us too - except there's never been one when/where I want to go!

Shhh! Don't tell. It's a great deal but they usually only offer eight seats per train at the "sale" price. Last year I went from Galesburg, Ill to Martinez, Ca. for $48.00. If you get lucky you often can upgrade (aboard only) to sleeper for a deep discount. Geoff, I'm worn out with all these caps. Brad

They may not be when/where you want to go, but you can go when/where they are (not so easy from the UK though, Geoff). I have done many trips lately where the destination was based on what's on Rail Sale. Nobody else should do this though, because they may take my seat.

Hard to earn Guest Rewards at those prices though.

You would also think Amtrak could make some bucks on onboard sales by filling trains. I know I am more willing to spend and tip when my ticket was so cheap. Although on some trains I've been on they were not even stocking the full menu at low traffic periods. The cafe attendant said it was due to budget cuts. I'd call that missed opportunity to grow a business with a captive clientele.
