I recently applied for a Train Attnedant position with Amtrak based out of New Orleans. It says the rate of pay is $12.91/hour. How do they figure how much to pay you? Do you "clock in" at the station before a trip, then "clock out" upon returning?
Also it says you must be able to be away from your crew base (New Olreans) for up to 6 days. Lets's say you make a round-trip run to Chicago on the City of New Orleans, it would only take 3 days. Would you then make a second trip or would you have some time off?
About how much are the monthly union dues?
Any info would be appreciated!

I've talked with some crews on the SW Chief, and they've told me that they work [crew base - away terminal - crew base] on one round-trip [LA-CHI-LA] and then have six days off at their home base before doing it again. So your schedule could be six days on the road, six days off, six days on, etc.! The best of luck to you, and keep us updated!

Union dues are $44 per month. There are an assigned number of hours for each job depending on what position you work. You are not paid for downtime {sleeping} nor are you paid for your layover time in hotel. When you start you will be on the extraboard, and when you complete a trip you are entitled to the number of hours off equal to the number of hours you were paid for on the trip. After this time you go on call again,however Amtrak can and will try to call you before your rest period is up and if you answer your phone and they say it is an "emergency" then you are required to report back to work whatever they need you for or you will break your monthly wage guarantee and only be paid for the Number of hours you work {if less than the guarantee}. The reference to 6 days may be if they needed someone to staff the sunset in an emergency situation. Hope this helps.
