Given the early AM arrival time in Pasco, WA on the westbound EB, I'm thinking of taking a detour via Seattle & Portland & then back to Pasco the next day. (Just a little more time on the train. . . ) Can anyone recommend a hotel in Portland not too far from the train station, but not too $$$. Also I've heard Jake's is a good place for dinner? Comments anyone?

Grandma Judy, Here's a site you might find useful in locating lodging near train stations: www.railhotels.com Of those in Portland listed on this site, my favorite is the Mark Spencer Hotel. The Amtrak Historical Society held its 2002 Annual Convention at this hotel. It's very close (a block or two) to Jake's (excellent restaurant if you like sea food); Whole Foods (rooms come with a full kitchen);and Powell's Books (pick up a map when you enter this place--it's huge; check out the rail transportation book section). You can catch the Portland Street Car nearby. MAX is 3-4 blocks away. It's about a 15 minute walk from Portland Union Station, but you might consider a $10 or so cab ride if you have a lot of luggage. Rates and special offers can be found at: www.markspencer.com

I've also found it a useful site for searching for rates and lodging locations near Amtrak stations.
Portland is a great city to visit, and I'm sure you will enjoy your stay.
It's pretty much just across the street from the Mark Spencer, a little cheaper and has more character IMO. I enjoyed my brief stay in Portland very much. The station is nicely restored and conveniently located.

Try the 'Embassy Suites' in the old totally refurbished and elegant old-world style Multnomah Hotel, downtown Portland. They offer FREE shuttle service to and from Union Station. Free cocktail hour if you want to socialize, and a massive free cooked to order breakfast the next day to get you on the road! Plus there is a wonderful steak restaurant on the premises.
