Hi,

I'm an artist and I am painting a scene of a car stopped at a railroad crossing in 1955. I'm wondering when certain crossing signs/devices were used at this time (1955), such as crossbucks, blinking lights, crossing arms.

Anyone know?

Thanks,

Scott

Any and all were in use during that era. Likely there were still "wig wag' X-ing signals in use as well.

Where in the world is this location supposed to be?

Some states used to have their own requirements for signs. The one I am most familiar with was posted on both sides of all railroad crossings in the state and said

MISSISSIPPI LAW
STOP

Stop was centered under Mississippi Law and in larger letters. Red on white background. Large rectangular wood sign.

Don't know when these things went away. Know they were there in the mid fifties, but sometime between then and the mid 60's they disappeared. Nor do I remember whether they had these where the crossing had flashing lights, etc. Very few crossings in the state had lights with or without gates at that time.
