Is anyone booking on-line (with a credit card) long-distance travel on Amtrak after October 1, when the new fiscal year starts? If they let Amtrak go bankrupt, what happens to the money--do you lose it? Also, I cannot remember if you book on line when they take the money out--is it when you book or when you travel?

If you book on-line the money is taken from your account immediately, exactly as if you made a transaction in a store etc (being a Brit, I cannot answer your query about what happens to American's money if they go bust, but over here you are protected in law and ultimately if you can't get your money back any other way the credit card company has to re-imburse you).

Definitely pay with a credit card online because the credit card would refund your money if you did not receive the service you contracted for. However, choose to pick up the tickets at a station (if possible) because it is much easier to refund if you change your plans and do not have possession of the ticket. You can pick up your ticket right before you travel, which is what I am doing with my August trip on the EB to the Izaak Walton Inn.

I wouldn't sweat over this. It is highly unlikely that Amtrak will go out of business, but if it does, I'm sure they would have the good sense to give refunds. You don't really expect to see a report on CNN this fall saying that Amtrak took money from thousands of people without providing either sevice or refunds, do you? It would be a political nightmare, not only for Amtrak, but for the politicians who let it happen. So it ain't gonna happen.

I believe that credit card companies are only obligated to make good on a business failure if it occurs within 60 days of purchase of the service.

What your hearing are rumors which have not been credited. Go ahead and book. I spoke with an agent who agreed that it's all talk. She said you can book eleven months in advance. If they were shutting down they would program their reservation system not to take any reservations after October 1st and would automatically refund those with reservations after the tickets have been sent back to Amtrak.
So it's business as usual . And to Bloody Bush get a life. Amtrak is going and your stopping people from booking past Oct 1st.
