Heads up Tehachapi fans!!
I have been reading this INCREDIBLE DETOUR news item on the Trainorders Amtrak discussion. This is apparently involving Amtrak PRESIDENT David Gunn so this thing will probably happen. This would be as I understand it the first time since 1974 (31 YEARS !!) that Amtrak has operated over Tehachapi:

#11 via Tehachapi this Sunday !!! (10/23)
Author: silagi
Just got word from someone at Amtrak that they are planning to detour #11 this coming Sunday between Sacramento and LA. Instead of going down the Coast, it will be going south from Sacramento to Fresno via the UP and then via the BNSF from Fresno to LA VIA TEHACHAPI!!!!.

Supposedly this move is being made to move David Gunn's biz car to LA, per a long-established itinerary that got interrupted by the trackwork in Santa Clara. Gunn pulled strings at UP and got the one-time move. 11 will operate SAC-BFD via the San Joaquin (BNSF) route, and then into LA by way of Palmdale and Metrolink thru Newhall to Burbank and LA.

Be careful getting too excited about this. As of 8pm tonight, Amtrak reservations is saying that #11(23) will terminate at OKJ with #1011 heading south from SJC due trackwork. As much as I would love this to be true, it seems odd to run a stub on the coast and reroute the regular consist. The stub #1011 is borne out by trying various bookings on amtrak.com. Having said all that, you can bet I'll keep trying to book SAC-LAX on #11!!

Sorry but we are talking about the entire Starlight going via Tehachapi. Amtrak was scheduling people to work the train earlier today. I dont think they would be doing that if they were going to tack Gunn's car onto the back of a BNSF train.

As Steve said, "Confidence is high" at this point but as with anything on the railroad, everything is subject to change.

Yes, I realize what Amtrak reservations is saying tonight. My info is from solid sources who do NOT spread rumors. HIGH-LEVEL Amtrak sources are saying that this is "FIRMED UP" Tonight and the Amtrak computers WILL be updated tomorrow morning (FRIDAY 10-21) East Coast time . Silagi who posted the original HOT info works with a police department and is a very BY-THE-BOOK person. He is the VERY LAST person that I would expect to start any sort wild rumors

Remember The Amtrak reservation phone agents information is only as good as what is currently in the computer tonight :(THRUS 10-20).
I therefore consider this Tehachapi detour information to be GOLDEN and SOLID. Of course anything can change however this info is SOLID at the CURRENT TIME and hour I post this at 9:20pm PDT THURS 10-20-05. I hope this answers your questions!

Fresno to LAX via Tehachapi on BNSF means going to Barstow, then SBDNO then LAX.
More likely would be Mojave to LAX via UP. So then why not UP all the way? Just thinking about the most expeditious and least disruptive to freight trains, especially over Cajon which has many many trains already.

The word on the routing for this RARE DETOUR is for train 11 to follow the regular morning San Joaquin train 702 Sacto to Bakersfield on the regular Amtrak route. From Bakersfield this RARE DETOUR will operate on the former SP route through Tehachapi--Mojave--Palmdale--Suagus--Newhall--Burbank--LA. The ATSF (BNSF) route thru Boron to Barstow and Cajon would be much too time consuming to run a passenger train on. This is when a far shorter route is available thru Palmdale to Burbank.

Amtrak.com shows #11 arriving in Los Angeles at 8PM and #1011 arriving at 8:30 PM for 10/23.

How come there has been service disruption on the southbound and not the northbound?? Train status shows no SEA-SJC service for #11 departing on 10/19, 10/20 and 10/21, and shows the stub 1011 operating SJC-LAX for 10/19-10/23. Did they really go three days in a row with no CS departing Seattle??? Yet the northbound #14 seems to operate normally all these days. How come??

One quick question: If the members of the forum here had to pick a line upon which they would like to have a rare mileage detour, what line would it be?

The choices are limited to lines that are currently in service, or existing, but shut down. Some of my choices would be the CN and CP routes that skirt Lake Superior, with a stop in Thunder Bay, The CNW route of the 400s from Saint Paul to MIlwaukee, and Tennesee Pass in Colorado. Your choices?

Excellent question! Why don't you pose it again in it's own thread so that more of us have a chance to play?

I've done the Wyoming 'CZ' detour now and I also got a detoured 'Silver Palm' from Dillon, SC to Hamlet, NC in 2003.

My remaining rare mileage faves would be....

1) The former Rio Grande Tennessee Pass in Colorado.....yes, yes, yes!

2) The former Burlington from Aurora, Il to LaCrosse, Wi which the current 'EB' does use sometimes.

3) The former Pennsylvaina line from Perryville, Md on the NEC up to Harrisburg, Pa.
