And if anyone is wondering which end of a railroad car is the "B" end, it is always the end where you will find the hand brake...in the case of a hi-level passenger car, it is always on the upper level. Maybe someone could have stopped that runaway coach in San Antonio recently, armed with this information, eh, Mr. Norman?

In San Antonio?, was it an Amtrak?, or a Comutter?

What's a comutter JONATHON?

There are no commuter trains in San Antonio, only Amtrak. Dallas-Forth Worth has a (if I may say so) 'stealth' commuter agency providing some degree of service within the so-named "Metroplex".

Here's the scoop, JONATHON:

On 15SEP2005 at approx. 215am, the yard crew at San Antonio was switching the Los Angeles through cars [Train 421(13)] from the Texas Eagle, Train 21(13) to Train 1(13).

Crew member failed to apply handbrake on occupied Coach 34084, on Track 2. Car rolled and sideswiped lead unit AMTK 140 on Train 1 on Track 3. One truck of the coach derailed. Five passengers reported minor injury but refused medical attention.

Yard crew was taken out of service pending drug/alcohol test and investigation. AMTK 140 had damage to safety appliances and was illegal for service. It was set out and replaced with AMTK 1. Coach 34022, originally to operate in Train 22 [15) was substituted for the derailed Coach; Train 22 operated short one coach.

Coach 34084 was rerailed at approx 1200.

Delays:

Train 1(13) 3 hr 15 min
Train 22(15) 1 hr 23 min

The above report was apparently taken from Amtrak sources, although it appears to have been widely circulated at various message boards.

I'm certain the term "B-end' is contained within the transcript of the "fair and impartial hearing and investigation'.

While hardly an incident to be included in some remake of "Silver Streak', it is indicative of what can happen "out there' when someone makes an honest oversight that nevertheless is a violation of the Book of Rules. It is a safe assumption that someone will be 'doing some time' as a result of the incident.
