An excellent and concise essay on what's good about trains: You see this country best from a train window.

A couple of quotes from the article:
quote:
I can't think of another ordinary circumstance where people from all walks of life and all parts of the country sit down together to share a meal and talk.
quote:
Unlike a theme park or a shopping mall or for that matter the aisles of a grocery store, nothing you see from a train window has been planned with you in mind.

What you see is the rest of America.

Thank you for this article, Mr. Toy. I really enjoyed it and found it captured my emotional attitude toward train travel pretty perfectly.

100% agreement with Sojourner and Dee. It needs to be posted in papers all over the country.

A nice read. The author delivered an excellent account of the feeling one can experience on a train. Our local Doylestown, PA paper, The Intelligencer, featured a travel by Amtrak article. The author traveled from Portland,Oregon to New York City via EB and the LSL. She enjoyed the Empire Builder experience. Alas, the poor Lake Shore wasn't up to to par. There was an engine breakdown, and not much "eats" left for lunch in the diner the next day. So she settled for a salad concoction. She traveled in sleepers. I wish I knew how to post it. The article was in the travel section of last Sunday's paper. I have to say when I saw her picture I said to myself "This one is going to be difficult".....but not so.

I read this in the Portland Oregonian on Sunday and I also thought it was a good article. I was very curious about this person since the byline only gave firt name initials. It didn't have a picture and we couldn't decide but thought it came from a woman's perspective. It really peaked our interest because her last name is the same as ours and it isn't a common name. It is wonderful to see folks do appreciate Amtrak even if it isn't perfect.
