I saw this report filed by Associated Press writer, Michael Tarm, today and thought I would pass it along, since Amtrak is mentioned several times.

The URl is: http://www.rr.com/view/content/story.cfm?storyId=5109882&newsgroup=9000&view=HOME

Apparently several freight lines are concerned that they are lacking sufficient track (really??)in order to complete their mission of transporting goods and by 2035 things will be pretty much in the toilet.

I'm wondering how they determined the magic year of 2035 and why they just now noticed they've only got single track in places they where need double/triple? Who is running these so-called businesses, anyway?

My conclusion, after reading the article, is that the prevailing business philosophy is: if one whines enough, perhaps Uncle Sam will rain a small shower of $$$ on you, because, after all, you don't want to spend your own $$$. Your own $$$ are for squandering on foolishness.

Anyway, looks like those Amtrak sidetrack delays aren't going to decrease anytime soon. [Big Grin]

Ms. Floridian, here is the same AP material courtesy of The New York Times. It may be a bit easier to read insomuch as it is not interfered with the array of popups and other distractions as it is at the site, albeit in good faith on your part, you located:

http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/us/AP-Rail-Congestion.html

Simply push "print" , which actually means "printer friendly version", to read the material without distractions of any kind

Those who have been taught to focus on short-term gain and create no real hedge for the future.
