In the recent issue of "Passenger Train Journal" it mentions a new "concierge class" service on the VIA, round-trip between Vancouver and Jasper.

The concierge service will run from June to October. It will feature an extra car with 6 double bedrooms converted into 3 suites, each with a queen-sized bed. The new service will also include access to a special dome observation car. Also, complimentary wine and a free open bar will be added.

I checked the VIA website and did not find anything regarding this new service, which is strange unless it is sponsered by a seperate travel agency (Brewster Vacations).

Here is a link:

http://www.gadling.com/2008/09/28/via-rails-new-concierge-class-offers-perks-drains-your-wallet/

The article mentions a cost of $1500. I can't believe that is the entire cost. I priced a normal round trip, on the VIA, between Vancouver and Jasper. The VIA site suggested a cost of around $1800 for a single "cabin" (bedroom). I have to wonder about the $1500 quoted in the link. Is the $1500 in addition to a basic cost (I hope not a basic cost of $1800!).

Richard, I realize that such was reported in TRAINS, but that report was made during Sept 2008.

Awful lot of water over the dam since then; my guess is that the proposal was silently put to sleep.

Probably so, Mr. Norman. The Passenger Train Journal issue was the 1st one of 2009, so it well could be that the concierge class service never made it off the ground.
