Ben Russo,
I suggest you start off by joining a Board of Directors of an existing museum first to get an idea of how things work. I am currently a volunteer board member of the Lomita Railroad Museum (20 mi south of Los Angeles) and let me tell you, things move very s-l-o-w-l-y. For small museums, most things are done by volunteers 'as time allows'.
You could do a web search also; California has an organization called the CAM (California Association of Museums) and no doubt New Jersey or the northeast area would have a similar organization.
