hey i'm new to the forum, happy to have found it... didn't know there were so many people so interested in rail!

i'm a student in CE now specializing in rail, and part of a resource project i'm doing this summer requires i try to put together a short list of "rising rail engineers" who I think will lead the future of rail engineering, and why. i really have no idea where to even start with this, and tried looking on some train websites like amtrak and PB, but they have nothing online about their people. so i was wondering if maybe anyone here knows any names that have stood out... thanks!

Is "CE" supposed to be Civil Engineering?
Is "PB" supposed to be Parsons Brinckerhoff? They are the major company in northeastern US transit and rail projects and a major player in transit and particularly passenger rail in many places around the world.

If it is the engineering side you are interested in, you should take a look at AREMA (American Railway Engineering and Maintenance of Way Association. There are other associations that you could check on. There is the British Permanent Way Institute which is an association of railroad track and bridge maintenance people that has groups in most parts of the world that have ever had any sort of British influence. There are also small specialist associations such as the Railroad Tie Association which is by and for people and companies involved with wood crossties and other treated wood product used by the railroads.

There are a few consulting companies that do rail work in the railroad industry. HDR is a big one and do quite a bit of work for the Class I's. There are others. There are some specialists that work individually or as part of small companies. There are also some labs that do the experimentation. Most are not rail only, but only a few do rail anything. Check on Batelle.

Most engineering for the various railroad companies is maintenance related. The engineers that are involved in the design and construction of new lines could, worldwide, probable all meet in a not too large auditorium.
