I am going to be building the Grand Valley layout by Woodland Scenics. What type of paint do you recommend for the plastic buildings? Can I use acrylic? Do I need a base coat? How about on the die cast metal parts?

Any other tips would be welcomed. I am new to the hobby but very excited to get going.

Thanks!!!

The brand of paint i reccomend for painting almost anything is Testors. It sticks to almost anything. I like it so much, I mix their military line of paints into railroad colors as I like how it goes on better than any other brand. For metal parts, just put on a coat of their gray primer, and paint away when the primer is dry.

I'll have to agree with Challanger, Testors makes some good paint at a low cost. I use acrylics for painting my wood buildings. Another tip for painting plastics and metal, make sure you wash all parts with soapy water and let dry real good before painting!!

Thanks for the quick response so far. I remeber using Testors on all my model planes as a kid. I guess the answer as to the type of paint would be oil based for the plastics and metals unless testors makes an acrylic.

Testor's Indeed makes an acrylic paint. It is Part of their "Model Master" line under the "Acryl" sub line. I have good results with it brush painting. But I am still trying to figure out how to use it in an air brush. I am having the same problem with Testors acrylics as I have had with every other acrylic paint I have tried, It keeps clogging their air brush. When I figure it out, I will let every one know. The nice thing about Testor's Acrylics is this. It does wash up with water. And if it doesn't quite fill the bill. A little application of rubbing alcohol is usually eneugh to finish the job.
