A customer at the train store where I work recently offered to pay me to wire his new layout. I have never done anything like this for hire. I am visiting him soon to look at his layout and assess what needs to be done. Has anybody out there hired somebody to work on their layout or been hired? What is a good way of generating an estimate? Per hour, per track-foot, block, etc.? What would an equitable rate be? Any assistance or shared experiences would be most greatly appreciated.

I haven't done it, but I know a couple of guys who have contracted to build layouts for other people. They generally charge by the hour plus materials for their work. Sometimes the customer buys the materials and they just charge an hourly rate for their labor.

I run my own custom paint and model railroad design business. On occasion I get asked to build my designs. The process generally involvs sitting down and determining the customers needs, what style of control they are wanting, and what they are wanting in return for their investment.
