Unfortunately Mike, those beautiful New Haven cars, one of which is shown in the photo in the link you submitted, were "rotten apples", namely what they had in aesthetics, they lacked in mechanical design.

There was a design deficiency that resulted in an angle cock being chafed to a closed position resulting in no brakes on the train other than on the engine.

I'm certain you have also ridden in those "8600's".

Probably on the State of Maine express, circa early 50's. I hope the irony of a train called the Federal Express tearing through the nation's capitol given today's headlines was not lost on you.

Models; but I think you can "get the drift". These were all good looking cars, be they Coach, Diner, Grill, or Parlor:

But they were "rotten to the core" with their as delivered mechanical deficiencies that were on display to the world a few days before Ike was inaugurated.
