Greetings from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. My name is Ken and among my many hobbies I am an amateur radio operator. (call sign WA3FKG) My interest in communications has drawn me into also being a “rail fan” though I 'm not quite sure how or why. I conduct a weekly on the air discussion forum or “net” where we talk about the hobby of scanning. One of the things I noticed from the scanner net was that many of the participants were avid listeners of rail road frequencies and knew quite a bit about the operation of the various rail lines in the area.
This interest lead one of our regular check ins, Dennis amateur call sign KB3HPC, to start a net on Thursday evenings to discuss all things related to railroads. This net has become very successful in its own right and is enjoyed by a number of amateur radio operators, or “hams”, in the Pittsburgh area as well as a number of scanner listeners.
I find myself exploring for more and more about railroads on the Internet and fascinated by the subject. Matter of fact my wife and I have decided to take a trip by train for our wedding anniversary. We will be going to visit our son in Las Vegas Nevada and traveling by train. A first for the both of us. I have been signing up with various forums at some of the web sites I have found such as this one.
If you are in the Pittsburgh area and are a licensed operator please join us on Thursday evenings for the Rail Fan Net. If you can only listen program your scanner for 146.880 and listen in. You may send comments and suggestions to Dennis via email addressed to railfannet @ hotmail.com I continue to learn and enjoy my “new hobby”.
