Hello gents, I am posting to ask for some information. I am doing some research into the life and times of the guys who made their living on the big steam giants. One of the elements that seems to be fairly invisible to me, is the human element from the era, these guys ate, drank, and slept on these machines, what was life like for them? I guess the issue here is that they are probably not with us anymore, but still if anyone knows of any of these guys I would love to get in touch with them, if nothing more than to have an email or forums conversation with them.
Also I would love to get some information on what life was like in the shops during the steam era, what was it like when a machine like a bigboy needed to have a staybolt replaced or a crownsheet repaired, let alone any of the other numerous parts on the locomotives.

Not sure where you are located but in Cheyenne Wyoming there is a really nice museum (2 to be exact) that has hundreds of photos and info on the life of railroaders back in the steam era. The other museum (steam shop) is where the Challenger stays as well as other older working locomotives. Look at upsteam.com and I think I have some pictures of inside the shop if you would like.
