We are new to your forum. We love trains, especially the old steamers. Just took a ride on the Durango & Silverton. Wonderful. We are planning a trip on the Cumbres & Toltec, next. Anyone rode this train? We spend a lot of time researching the history of the train from Caliente,nv to Las Vegas, nv. We can recommnend a couple of good books on this area. heath1&2

According to a recent newsletter, the Cumbres & Toltec is not currently running (at least it wasn't as of July 1). The Forest Service did not allow service to continue because of the extreme fire danger in the area.

Suggest you call or check on line before heading out there.

Don't know if it will help much, but about 120 miles from Caliente, NV is another railroad that runs steam- the Nevada Northern. It uses 2-8-0 number 93 on trips west of Ely through Robinson Canyon to the wye at Keystone, and an Alco RS3 (number 109, ex-Kennecott) on trips on the so-called Hiline to Adverse, above McGill (site of the old smelter).

We haven't been hit by the fire dangers so far like Colorado has.

The website is Nevada Northern Ry. .
