I've been looking forward to this afternoon for a month now as I start on a 9800 (or so) mile, 18 day Amtrak marathon/junket . . . just for the fun of it.

The abbreviated itinerary: Lake City, Florida to Los Angeles, San Diego, back to LA, then on to Denver (via Raton), Sacramento, Seattle, Chicago, New Orleans and back to Lake City. (You can guess the trains yourselves!)

Yes, sleeper everywhere, and with a total of 8 nights "on the ground."

Very excited . . . will report back on anything unusual...

Cool trip, are you spending any time in Sacramento, outside of the layover? hopefully you have a night in SAC, the Cal. St. Railway Museum is a great place to spend some time. Old Sacramento is adjacent to the museum and a short walk from the train station.
I'm still hoping to get a trip in before summer comes.
Please keep us informed as to your trip.

Kairho -- I've got you beat!! I too am taking another long trip this summer, and will be posting a travelogue to Train Web after my trip. My itinerary is Winter Park (Fla.) to New York, New York to Chicago, Chicago to L.A. via San Antonio (Texas Eagle/Sunset), L.A. to San Diego, overnight in San Diego, S.D. back to L.A., then to Seattle, overnight in Seattle, Seattle to Chicago, Chicago to New Orleans, then back to Winter Park. It will be my first AMTRAK trip since 1999 -- let us know how your trip goes!!

(notice I planned an overnight layover in southern California, in case the Sunset is running 8-9 hours late again by late June, like it was doing a month or two ago!!)

-- Rich K

P.S. I too take sleepers on all overnight portions of my trips!!

The highlght of the year is my annual Amtrak journey. I ve always taken cross country trips each year. Last summer I logged over 10,000 miles. This summer Im using Amtraks Western region explore America fare starting in Las Vegas.bus to LA, SW Chief to Raton, overnight, then bus to Denver, overnght, Zephyr to Reno, overnight, back on Zephyr to Emeryville,Starlight to Portland, Empire Builder to Whitefish, overnight, Builder back to Portland, Starlight to LA, Surfliner to San Diego, two days exploring, then back to LA and theSunset Limited to Tucson to conclude my two week Western adventure. I ll be riding a portion of each of the Western trains. Coach for the most part except for a sleeper from Portland to LA on the Coast Starlight. That was the most reasonably priced segment I found. Two months to go...anticipation is great. Ive been doing annual Amtrak trips for twelve years and the thrill of the train arriving in the station is still one of the greatest joys of life!
