I am hoping to take my first train trip from Seattle to Chicago very soon. Would love to have a family sleeper although cost sounds prohibitive. Does anyone know of how upgrades work with rail travel in comparison to airlines? In air travel, I use my airline mileage points for upgrading to first class, which makes it affordable. Anything similar on rail? Hoping to talk my husband into rail travel for meetings, as I hate to fly. I would a reply ASAP as we are scheduled to go this coming week-end. Thank-you!

According to Amtrak literature, the policy on upgrades is something like this:
" Sleeping car, Club Service, and Custom Class accomodations may be purchased on board trains if unsold space is still available. Passengers wanting to purchasean upgrade of accomodations should consult the Conductor or Cheif of On-Board Services." In other words, upgrades are made on a space-available basis. I don't think that Amtrak has a program where one can redeem mileage for "points," - at least, not in the LD trains. Other members of the board are welcome to chime in and provide someclarification / correction if my suspictions are in error.

You'll have to contact either Amtrak itself, or a travel agent, in order to determine if there is still accomodations for you to upgrade to. The other options are ( and this is a serious answer) to wait until 4:30 am of the day of your departure, call Amtrak, and see if you can get a hold of spaces that have just become available due to another passenger's cancellation of their trip. You can also wait until you show up on the train & make enquiries to the persons listed above. You'll be travelling on the Empire Builder, which is known for having being heavily booked throughout the year with no "off" season. I've known several individuals who were able to get accomodations at the very last moment because the Amtrak computers don't list the day's cancellations until approx. 4:30 am CDT. You'll also be responsilbe for paying the difference in price, obviously, between coach & sleeper class. If you really wanted a sleeper aboard the Builder, you would be advised to go ahead and simply get the sleeper tickets, instead of having to wait until the last minute & be forced to use the options I have just described.
On the other ahnd, there are very few things that get the adreniline pumping like trying to get accomodations and catch a train at the very last minute. Best wishes in your endevours. When I made reservations for my trip aboard the Builder this weekend, I had to get the tickets weeks in advance.

Amtrak does offer a "Guest Rewards" program.
You earn points for travel and you can also earn points by charging on the Amtrak Mastercard.
The points can be used for Amtrak travel or towards various Amtrak partners (Hertz, Hotels, etc.).
You can find all the details on the Amtrak web site.
My wife and I have earned a free trip by using this program.
BTW, we have taken the Empire Builder from Chicago to Seattle and really enjoyed the trip. A sleeper is not a bad deal when you factor in that dining car meals are included in your fare, and the sleeping comfort and privacy you gain over coach travel.
Have a nice trip !

If you upgrade on the train, (if there is space left), you can save money, we do offer a discount for en-route upgrades.
