Hi folks - I'm planning my next trip to the States for later this year and it looks as if I'll be coming into or out of SFO. Simple question: if you are travelling on the San Jose-Sacramento line (in either direction) which is the best/most convenient/nearest station to get to and from the airport? Are there any bus links or is it a taxi job, and if so are there cab ranks at the station and what is the "average" journey time? Many thanks.

Mr. Williams,
A little background, SFO is actually located about 7 miles south of the City of San Francisco.
You have two options....
1. a very short bus or taxi ride (about 2 miles) to the City of Millbrae, Cal Train Station. Take the Train (commuter line, about 20 miles) to the Jose Station (Amtrak Capitol line).
2. a much longer & more expensive taxi ride (across the Bay Bridge) to either the Emeryville or Jack London (Oakland), both about the same distance, Amtrak Stations (Capitol line).
Things to consider - although Cal Train offers a varied schedule it is possible, depending on your SFO arrival time, that a train connection may not be possible.
The taxi distance to either Emeryville or Jack London (Oakland) is about 15 miles and the fare would depend on if you encounter stalled commute traffic.
Welcome to the States!

Since your trip isn't planned until "later this year", the new SFO BART extension may allow you to handily connect between SFO and the Richmond BART/Amtrak joint station on the Capitol route. SFO extension date not fixed and frequently delayed but should at least be within a few months.

Suggestion:
If you are scheduled to arrive in S.F. in the early afternoon, if I remember correctly, (it's been about 3 years), and make your connection at a point closer to the city, say Emeryville or Jose, be sure to plan AT LEAST 30 to 45 minutes of extra travel time between locations. Avoid the Oakland connection during the evening, due to EXTREME traffic, even using BART system.
