Welcome!!!

You didn't indicate where you were starting from, or which train you are taking to New Orleans. I assume you're taking the City of New Orleans to New Orleans, and the Sunset Limited from New Orleans to Florida. I can't answer your question about New Orleans, as I have never been there, but I hear the station is in a rather rough neighborhood.

Don't count on your trains to be on time. But don't count on them being late, either.

If you are riding coach you will be directed to a seat by the car attendant when you board. Once aboard, remain in your seat until a conductor comes to take you ticket. You shouldn't have to wait more than a few minutes. The conductor will place a tag called a "seat check" above your seat to indicate your destination and that the seat is taken. After that you are free to move about the train at will (except into sleeper cars). If you are curious about sleeping accomodations for possible future trips, ask someone to show them to you.

If you leave your seat it is advised to take cameras or other valuables with you, or at least keep them hidden in your bags.

You will be riding on double-decker Superliner equipment which offer great views of the countryside.

Rest rooms and luggage racks are on the lower level. The rest rooms are tiny, but the handicapped unit in coaches are huge and you don't have to be handicapped to use it. Faucets have been known to have too much pressure and often splatter. Now and then you'll find a car where the pressure is just right.

Seats are reasonably comfortable and offer ample legroom for sleeping. They recline and have both a leg rest and foot rest. Sort of like a lay-z-boy. Legroom is way better than anything you will find in almost any other vehicle, public or private. This allows you to recline without putting your seatback in someone's face, like on an airliner. There is storage space under the seat in front of you, and above your head. There is also an overhead reading light. Overnight you will get a small airline style pillow.

When walking on a moving train spread your legs a little farther apart than normal for better balance. Use the handholds when passing between cars. Always wear shoes when walking about the train. This is mandatory.

Food is available in two places. Table service with freshly cooked meals are available in the diner at specified hours. Quality is generally good, sometimes excellent, but can vary with individual chefs. Tip your server as you would in any restaurant. A cafe with a variety of packaged sandwiches, snacks, beverages, etc is also available on the lower level of the lounge car. This is open all day and usually closes at about 11:00pm. It is also closed during the attendant's meal breaks.

Stops and other information are announced over a PA system running through the train.

Talk to strangers. You'll learn things you never knew you didn't know. You'll make friends in short order.

Finally, my standard advice to first time Amtrak travelers is to expect to have fun, but don't expect perfection. This is Amtrak, not the Orient Express.

Good luck. Please report back after the trip and let us know how it went. We regulars here especially enjoy reading the impressions of first-time riders.

My wife & I were at the NOLA train station in April.
The general area is okay but you need a taxi to get to the downtown hotels or french quarter.
The first class lounge is more like a parcel post lounge. Very small, very old hand-me-down mixed-matched furniture, a coffee pot that might be working, and no air conditioning (the room is hot & humid!). The general waiting area is actually better.

Agreed, the station is in a reasonable area. Taxi ride to anywhere downtown is $10 or meter fare, whichever is the greater (very expensive, but it's not really walking distance either).

Yes, New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal is in an OK part of downtown (2 blocks from Super Dome). Usually when I go through NOL on my train trips, I'll stay at the Holiday Inn Downtown on Loyola Street, which is a few blocks away from the station (nice hotel, especially the "jazz murals" and music in the parking garage!). I've never had problems walking to the French Quarter from downtown -- it is fine during the day, but I have been advised to take a taxicab back from the French Quarter at night (even though I personally have never had problems walking back to the Holiday Inn at night).

And yes, the "first class lounge" at NOUPT is kind of lame..... (the "Magnolia Lounge")but it's a nice quiet place to wait for your train (especially since the attendant on duty is rarely there). I don't remember the "hot and humid" part, though.... It was fine last time I was there (3 years ago), but may have gone downhill since that time.

Clearly I was misinformed about New O. But all this talk about the station makes me want to go there now.

I think Mr. Toy did an excellent job of explaining life on a cross-country train above. The one thing I would clarify is this: When Amtrak trains are late, they are not minutes late like an airplane, they are hours, sometimes even double-digit hours late. The train may be on-time, but it is quite possible it may be several hours late.

Mr. Toy - you've never been to NOL by AMTRAK? Don't get the wrong impression by these posts -- I didn't mean to glorify New Orleans or the station too much. It is true that there is a lot to do and see in New Orleans, but, as in any large city, of course you have to be cautious and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Certainly crime and prostitution are not unknown in The Big Easy, but if you are careful and pay attention to things, you shouldn't have any problems. All I was saying by my comments was that, in general, you don't need to worry about getting mugged as you leave the station to get into your taxicab. And yes, the New Orleans station is indeed rather lame -- not real impressive, especially since it shares its space with the bus terminal, but there are restaurants (at least one) in the station, lockers, the "first class lounge", and at least one other shop of some kind, and the station is not that far from the French Quarter.

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR HELP WITH MY TRAIN RIDE.
YOU WERE VERY INFORMATIVE AND HELPFUL. I AM HOOKED NOW, I WANT TO RIDE THE TRAIN AGAIN..THE GIRLS AT WORK KEPT MY PHONE HOT ALL NIGHT BECAUSE THEY WANTED TO RIDE ALSO..
LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT THE TRIP..I STARTED OUT IN TUSCALOOSA AL. I LEFT THE STATION AROUND 2:10 PM. IT WAS AN OLDER TRAIN BUT NICE.
I TALK TO EVERYONE SO I MET A FRIEND RIGHT AWAY. AN RN JUST LIKE ME....
THE WHOLE RIDE WAS AN ADVENTURE, SHE HAD RIDDEN BEFORE AND HELPED ME FIND MY WAY. THEY TOOK MY TICKET AT THE DOOR AND TOLD ME WHICH SEAT TO TAKE...
I WENT TO THE SNACK BAR AND GOT A COKE.. I VISITED THE REST ROOMS...AS FAR AS I WENT..
WE ARRIVED IN NEW ORLEANS AROUND..8PM I DID NOT HAVE THE TIME TO STAY SO I STAYED AT THE STATION, THOUGH I PLAN TO GO BACK AND STAY IN NO A DAY OR TWO. THE GIRL I MET WAS OFF IN NO. THE TRAIN STATION IS NOT IN THE BEST AREA, BUT NEITHER IS BURBON STREET..BUT IT HAS GUARDS AND I DID NOT FEEL THREATENED. THERE WERE A FEW STREET PEOPLE WHO CAME IN AND ASKED FOR CIGARETTES BUT THE GUARDS WERE QUICK TO REMOVE THEM. THE STATION IS LARGE, OLDER WITH GREAT PAINTINGS ON THE WALL..IT HAS THE GREYHOUND STATION ON ONE side AND AMTRAK ON THE OTHER. THERE IS A SUBWAY AND BY THIS TIME OF NIGHT A CLOSED GIFTSHOP.
I TOOK A MAGAGINE AND A BOOK..THE TRAIN WAS 6 HOURS LATE BECAUSE IT WAS STOPPED BY THE POLICE AND THE DOGS HAD TO SEARCH THE TRAIN.
THEN THEY HAD SOME OTHER UNEXPECTED STOPS..
THE SECOND TRAIN WAS THE TWO LEVEL...I GOT ON AROUND 4AM...THE PROBLEM..THEY DID NOT TELL ME WHRE TO SIT BUT TRAIN RIDERS ARE REALLY NICE PEOPLE AND THEY HELPED ME FIND A SEAT..I REALLY LIKED THIS TRAIN TOO...I SLEPT MUCH OF THE NIGHT...THE SEATS RECLINE AND ARE COMFORTABLE.. I HAD TAKEN A SMALL PILLOW AND A
COVER SO I WAS FINE...
THE PEOPLE ARE FRIENDLY AND THE SERVICE WAS GOOD. I DID NOT GET TO VISIT THE DINING CART..I ARRIVED IN PENSACOLA AROUND 11:20 AM
I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO GOING ON ANOTHER RIDE AND THANK ALL OF YOU NICE PEOPLE FOR YOUR KIND WORDS AND ADVICE....

Another satisfied customer. Thanks for the report.

Interesting that Amtrak and Greyhound share the station in New O. That might offer some interesting travel opportunities off the Amtrak path.

One thing you can do to help. Tell your Congressman and Senators you enjoyed your trip and hope to do more. They need to hear that if we are ever to improve the system.

To NSEONE - glad you enjoyed your trip!! One note about etiquette in this forum -- please do not write in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS -- THAT IS VERY HARD TO READ, and besides that, it is taken as "yelling" by some!!

Welcome to this forum!! Hope to hear more from you on future train trips!

Just looked at the timetable for the Crescent (Tuscaloosa to New Orleans, point-to-point) on Amtrak's web site...scheduled departure time 1:47 pm and scheduled arrival time of 7:58 pm. That is an average speed of but 48 mph Come on, Congress, you guys have no problem kicking out the cash to build highways that facilitate a four-hour driving time for the same journey...
