Amtrak's Superliner coaches are bi-level cars. The lower level has the entry vestibule, a luggage rack, a small number of seats and the rest rooms. Coaches also have a handicapped rest room. The upper level just has seats, no rest rooms. The way to get from one car to another is on the upper level.
One advantage of the lower level is that it sways less than the upper level.
If you are seated on the upper level and need to use the rest room, you will have to go downstairs. If you are seated on the lower level, and wish to go to the diner or lounge, you will have to go upstairs.
If your mobility is limited, the attendant should be able to bring food to you. Here is Amtrak's policy on that: http://www.amtrak.com/plan/accessibility-meals.html
Lower level coach seats are limited in supply and are available by reservation. If you do not request a lower level seat, you will be assigned to an upper level seat by the coach attendant when you board. If, after you board, you find you would like a different seat, the attendant may be able to accommodate you, but only if space is available. If you want to change your reservation to a lower level coach, call 1-800-USA-RAIL and when "Julie" comes on say "Agent" to talk to a real person who can help you.
