I was just wondering if there is anywhere on the amtrak website or elsewhere that lists which stations tickets can be purchased at. Also, if that can be found, does that source or another say what hours these stations are open?

Yes. On the front page of the website, in the "Fast Fare Finder" feature, it has a link called "Station List," or something to that affect. When this window is opened, you can click on the links and the information you want should be listed.

All it did for me was give a list of station codes and when I clicked on the station name all it did was insert the code in the blank above where I clicked the "list stations" thing.

Then try this: When you get to the Amtrak home page, click on "Trains and Destinations." This should take you to a page where you may input the name of a station. Once you do this, then click "Search." The station information should come up on the screen.

I was aware of doing that already, but those pages don't come close to answering my questions. For example, with the page for the Fargo, North Dakota station athttp://www.amtrak.com/stations/far.html it says the station is staffed, but that doesn't tell me if tickets can be bought there for sure. Even if they can be bought at all staffed stations and Amtrak expects one to magically know that, there isn't at all involving station hours listed on that page.

There are many people who assume that all Amtrak stations will have agents, in addition to selling them tickets. many members of the general public just assume staffed station = ticket agent on hand.
I concede your point that the Amtrak site doesn't list hours for available ticket agents at all stations. My advice, should yu want to deal with a ticket agent, would be to deal with someone at a travel agency. That way, at least you'll know when there will be folks on hand - even when you are embarking at someplace like Staples, MN, or Red Wing (neither of which have any staff members available).
