Engine of Miami-bound Amtrak partially derails in Polk County

Associated Press

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Several wheels of the engine on an Amtrak train traveling from New York to Miami derailed Thursday afternoon, forcing 180 passengers to take buses to their destinations.

No one was injured in the slow-speed accident. The Amtrak Silver Star was traveling at about 10 mph when three of the engine's wheels slipped off the tracks.

The accident happened where the train normally slows to switch tracks in Auburndale, officials said.

Jerry Chancey, the train's conductor, said deterioration caused the tracks to widen, letting the wheels slid off without "much of a jolt."

"It's just wear and tear," Chancey told The Ledger, of Lakeland. The train tracks are owned and maintained by CSX railroad. A CSX official at the derailment declined comment.

On Thursday evening, passengers and their bags were loaded onto buses near the train to complete their trips Those going all the way to Miami were expected to arrive about six hours late.

Some passengers said they were frustrated by the delay and the lack of information provided by Amtrak.

"It was scary to a lot of people," said Robin Daniels, traveling from Washington D.C. to Fort Lauderdale with her 6-year-old granddaughter, Jordyn.
