If anyone knows the condition of the CSX (ex-L&N) route used by the Sunset Limited (when it's not running super late), please post this info. TV reporters in Mobile appeared to be stationed at the hotel across the street from the Amtrak station and said it was likely to be totally flooded around there. East of Mobile, the railway travels through many low-lying bayous near the Mobile River including infamous Bayou Canot. A tornado reportedly hit the Pensacola Civic Center which is a block from the rails and within a few blocks of the Amtrak station. The line then follows the edge of Escambia Bay just above sea level for several miles. Storm surge was massive in the area. And the eastbound span of the I-10 crossing of the bay washed out and partially collapsed while the westbound span suffered overwash and broken guard rails. The CSX bridge used by the Sunset is just a few hundred yards to the north. It is a high trestle too and seems to be farther above the water than the highway approaches so maybe it was spared.
