Last summer when we were 14 hours late getting home to Florida, I vowed to avoid the Sunset Limited. But the new padded schedule, the need for a train ride, and business in Phoenix have me heading westward on May 6. Unfortunately I have to drive to New Orleans in a rental car as the train doesn't operate to Florida due to trackwork during midweek. I will get to ride the rails all the way back. Report forthcoming.

Before you go to car rental, check Greyhound. www.greyhound.com Sicne the station is the same in NO, the transfer is easy. Give yourself about an hour. Closer is probably OK, as they have enough padding to generally get there just about as scheduled into a major point like New Orleans, but I have on one occasion experienced a 2 hour late Greyhound because of nothing else but their inability to come up with a second bus.

Thanks but no way I am riding a nasty, uncomfortable bus. I can drive a rental car and enjoy the trip by spending a night in a hotel en route and still save money from what the sleeper would have cost to NOL.
