This probably was discussed before, but I am flying into LA later this year and taking the train the next day. I want to avoid the overpriced shuttle. What is the best way to go from the airport to Union Station and is it considerably cheaper than taking the downtown shuttle van? Thanks in advance.

Actually, it's kind of a hassle. You have to take a shuttle bus (free) to the green line, transfer to the blue line and transfer again to the red line. Takes about an hour at least. I think the fare is $1.35, or you can buy a $3 day pass for unlimited riding all day. Burbank airport would be easier if the timings worked with Metrolink. www.experiencela.com gives you all the details about public transportation in general in LA. Very good website. Check it out. LA is entirely doable without a car, contrary to urban myth.

There are several MTA (LA Metro Bus System) buses that go to Union Station, if you go to www.mta.net, I am sure you would not have to transfer more than once to get from LAX to LAUPT.

As long as you have the time and not too much luggage, taking the Metro as City of Miami mentioned is not a big deal. Where will you be spending the night? That could easily affect your plan.

I'll put in my usual plug here for eating at Phillipe's at Alameda and Ord. Home of the French Dip sandwich. Easy walk from LAUPT.

Thanks for the tips. I knew there was a way to do it via subway, just wasn't sure how. I'll be staying at the Days Inn across from Union Station. I 'll have plenty of time to make it from the airport.

Im visiting some friends for a long weekend I ll be taking the Surfliner to San Luis Obispo round trip from LA. Always have to include one train ride when I go on vacation.

You should have no problem then. Easy walk to the Days Inn from LAUPT and you have lots of choices of places to eat in Olvera Street (Mexican), Phillipe's (sawdust of the floor, very casual, big breakfasts), and Chinatown is walkable, too. We really like the dim sum at Empress Pavillion. It's at the far end of Chinatown in the Bamboo Plaza Building but worth the effort. We've never spent more than $10.00 a person and always leave comfortably full.

Frank in Cloudy, Cool SBA. (The Starlight got here at 10:52 PM last night with, according to our friend, lots of unhappy campers on board.)

I have one thing to say about taking the Metro-light rail: DON'T DO IT!!!!!! ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE LUGGAGE!!!TOO MUCH OF A HASSLE!!!I KNOW FROM EXPERIENCE!!! Same with the MTA busses. You might have better luck forking the $ over to take one of those shuttle vans/busses downtown. I'm sure you'll find one that would take you to Union Station.

I can't speak to the bus but if you have a small rollaboard and a tote you should have no trouble at all on the Green, Blue and Red lines. There are elevators that make access very easy to the platform level.

Last Thursday I took the Surfliner from SBA to LAUPT arriving ontime at 4:55PM. At 5:05PM I was on a Gold Line train headed to Sierra Madre Villa Station. That trip took 35 minutes and cost $1.25. Even at that time of day I had a seat and there was plenty of room for my bag.

I did notice, though, that you now apparently need a seperate ticket for each line you ride. The best bet if you are going from Green to Blue to Red would be a $3.00 day pass. If anyone knows differently let me know.

I'll be doing the trip in reverse on Tuesday after a great visit with family in Nashville.

Frank, temporarily in BNA, but usually in SBA
