Just in case ----- I'm cashing in my Guest Reward points this summer with a couple of rail trips.

19 Hours until departure (12 hours until I last sign on to the forum) on the first of two summer rail adventures.

On this trip I will fly to Albuquerque, catch the 'Southwest Chief' to LAX and then the 'Coast Starlight' to Portland, OR. I'll spend what's left of the night when I arrive at Chris Guenslers' recommended Airport Days Inn (It's on the light rail line!) and then do a Cascades round-trip to Seattle the next day.

After another night in the Days Inn I will fly (boo-hiss) to Salt Lake City, rent a car, visit Promontory Summit to see the Golden Spike site and also visit the Nevada Northern Railway Museum in Ely, NV. I'll depart eastward on the 'California Zephyr' to Denver and fly home from there. I'm in roomette ABQ-LAX-PDX and in coach otherwise.

Look for a report on the good, the bad, the ugly, and the unexpected when I return home on or about July 7........meaning I'll be home July 7 but it may be a day or tow later before I'm ready to write it up and post.

Advocating for passenger trains since 1973!

Climbing toward 5,000 posts like the Southwest Chief ascending Raton Pass. Cautiously, not nearly as fast as in the old days, and hoping to avoid premature reroutes.
