Does anyone here know why Amtrak decided to put a foot rest on each seat back and then a leg rest attached to each seat? If you notice you cannot reach the next seat unless you have long legs. I don't see how it could help when you recline the seat. The tray table as I recall barely reaches the passenger. Why didn't Amtrak decide to add tray tables for the bulkhead seats in the coach cars? I may be missing something here.

Regarding the footrest, it is adjustable. It pivots up and down, and when it it up, it is closer. It has been awhile since I rode a Superliner coach, but as I recall I had no trouble reaching it when it was up, and I'm only 5"7". I would make the most use of it when sleeping, though, as I tended to sleep more slunk down in my seat. It kept my feet from dangling in mid air.

I might mention that the leg rest and foot rest design predates Superliners by a few decades. Streamliner era coaches had nearly identical leg and foot rests, and similar legroom.

But they did not have the airline style fold down tables, which were introduced with Superliners. If I recall, the table can be pulled towards you after you unfold it.

Possibly the reason why they didn't install tables for the frontmost seats is because many years ago it was common practice to turn the front row of seats backwards, so that three or four people traveling together could face each other. In recent years this practice has regretably been abandoned.

(NB: All the seats in coach cars can be turned to face the opposite direction, so the entire car need not be turned if the train's direction changes. I've noticed when Superliners are substituted for commuter coaches, they place every other row in the opposite direction. This keeps at least half the seats facing forward when the train reverses direction in push-pull operation.)

I agree with Mr. Toy. Putting both legrests and both footrests up forms a small bed, albeit tilting, . I found this comfortable for laying across the seats with your head by an armrest, your backside by the other armrest, and your feet on the footrest, ie L-shaped, on your side. I am also 5'7 and I'm not sure taller people would be able to do that. This, of course, assumes that you have both seats to yourself.

Tray tables... pretty useless, and rattle. I don't use them. I prefer to eat purchased-on-board food in the lounge car anyway.

Even at 5"10.5 I can make a Superliner Seat into a bed by putting the seat all the way back, using the seat leg rest all the way up and the foot rest all the way up. I curl up and sleep the night away. A jacket betwen the seat and leg rest is a key. Of course, I take my own pillow as I can sleep anywhere with it and a blanket.

I will be doing this both ways to New Orleans on the Sunset leaving December 16th.

I like the seats they are like a bed as Mr.Toy says. It's like those Air France Business Class seats lol. I feel relaxed in coach. It's better than flying on a 747 in coach where they are around 200-300 seats. Here you have a small cabin like in Business Class. Just sit away from the doors and stairs.
