So will the Chief stay on this line or move to the southern route? My guess is it will stay put. May also be good news for a better Albuquerque Amtrak station now.

My opinion is that the SWC will remain on its present route. The BNSF route East from Belen is very busy with the greatest freight business the RR has ever seen and the SWC would add to the congestion. Also the present route has the ATC system in effect at some locations which allows passenger trains to operate at speeds greater than 79 MPH and this could be expanded by the State for both the SWC and their commuter service.

Politics will also come into play with substantial resistance to removal of passenger service between Newton, KS and ALB. I suspect that when the details of the Agreement are known we will learn that both the State and BNSF want the SWC to continue as it is.
