I have been on SW Chief both ways as far west as Flagstaff but never been west of there. I plan to do another loop in 2007 (possibly February or March) and wondered which is nicer, scenerywise, Flagstaff to LA or LA to Flagstaff?

Unless the schedule changes dramatically - LA to Flagstaff is overnite. In the dark - sun just coming up as you get to Flagstaff.(LA 6:45 pm - Flagstaff 5:56 am). Same with the Flagstaff to LA. Night the whole way.(Flagstaff 9:51 pm - LA 8:15 am).

I just went LAX to ABQ, didnt see any of Flagstaff or anything of California/Arizona on #4. I reccomend #3 for seeing a bit more, from ABQ we were able to see the Flagstaff station. But really as DeeCT said, you cant see much going either way. It was quite a dissapointment for me as well on my trip.

But if # 3 is late as has been recently discussed then you may see more going west.

#4 early morning, #3 later evening. Not much to see either way. I would say #4 is a bit better as you do get early morning sun.
